VCJH eighth grader Daniella Ciprian had quite an amazing experience this summer in Gothenburg, Sweden as she participated in an international soccer tournament. The team she played for was a national team comprised of girls from the East and West Coasts of the US, affiliated with the Bayern Munich International Soccer Development Program.
The girls first gathered with each other and their coach on a Friday and the tournament started the following Monday. Despite being together for barely a weekend, the team had an amazing showing and finished with a 7-1 record, bringing home the Bronze Medal! They outscored their opponents 33-4 in regulation play, and their 2-0 loss in the semi-final match was to a Swedish national team out of Stockholm that had played together for several years.
The tournament featured 48 teams in Daniella’s age group of 13-year-old girls. Overall, there were 1709 teams, ranging in age from 11-18 years old, from 80 nations, competing in 4170 matches. From holding the American Flag during the Opening Ceremony with about 60,000 people in attendance, to holding the team trophy and wearing her Bronze Medal at the end of the tournament, it was truly a GREAT experience! In Daniella's words, "My soccer goal in life is to get more opportunities like the Gothia World Cup and travel the world and glorify God through this experience."
Congratulations, Daniella! We’re proud of you!
